The quantitative finance concentration is a STEM finance program within the Babson MBA. With a heavy focus on programming and financial modeling, you will develop the skills needed to analyze financial markets.

An MBA Finance Concentration with STEM Finance Program Credentials

The programming and financial modeling skills you gain by concentrating in quantitative finance will set you up for a rewarding career in the financial services industry. Students will have the preparation and skillset for a wide variety of career paths, including investment banking, quantitative asset management and trading, financial engineering, risk management, and equity and fixed income research.  

The MBA in quantitative finance concentration is STEM-designated, meaning students graduating with this concentration may be eligible for 36 months of OPT vs. 12 months for students in non-STEM degree programs.

Babson's Academic Centers and Institutes

Babson's academic centers and institutes provide students with experiences, mentors, events, resources, and more. Through the Centers, students put the concepts they learn in class into practice in the real world. Quantitative finance concentrators are encouraged to get involved with the Stephen D. Cutler Center for Investments and Finance.

Associate Professor and Research Scholar Yunwei Gai is passionate about health economics. He grew up in a small city in China, earned his PhD at Florida State University, and now studies the relationships between policies, environmental factors, and individual health behavior and outcomes. He teaches the Economic and Financial Forecasting elective in the MBA in quantitative finance.

MBA in Quantitative Finance Curriculum

The quantitative finance concentration is a 12 credit commitment. Three of your credits must come from Derivatives: Theory and Practice, the only required course in this STEM finance program. The other nine credits can be taken from a wide array of finance and economics courses. Class offerings change; all courses may not be listed here. 

All quantitative finance concentrators must take this core derivatives course: 

  • FIN7550 Derivatives: Theory and Practice, 3 credits

Choose at least two electives from the following list:

  • FIN7513 Fixed Income, 3 credits
  • FIN7516 Corporate Finance: Evaluating Opportunities, 3 credits
  • FIN7518 Managing Portfolios, 3 credits
  • FIN7545 Financial Trading Strategies, 3 credits

Choose one elective from the following list, or a third elective from Requirement B.

  • FIN7504 Risk Management, 3 credits
  • FIN7573 Investment Banking and Financial Modeling, 3 credits
  • ECN7520 Economic and Financial Forecasting, 3 credits
  • ECN7510 Financial Macroeconomic Data Analysis, 3 credits
  • QTM7571 Business Intelligence, Analytics, & Visualization, 3 credits
